5 things to know before making your food choices

  1. Every body is different. We all have different genes, which impact our metabolism, muscle composition, and activity levels. Different bodies run better on different macronutrients like carbohydrates, protein and fat. There is no one-size-fits-all diet. Experiment by eating different kinds of foods and notice how you feel, and what happens to your energy level or weight. Eventually, you will find what works best for you.
  2. Sticking to regular scheduled eating times may improve your energy. As with macronutrients, you may need to experiment to find out what works best for you. You can try eating 5-6 smaller meals rather than 3 meals a day, spreading your eating between 7am-7p, or whatever hours fit your lifestyle. Eating frequently signals to your body that you will feed it again soon, and it may not hold on to fat as a reserve. Long periods of time without eating can slow your metabolism down as your body doesn't know when the next meal is coming. Be consistent to train your body to be more efficient. 
  3. Plan your meals and prep them ahead of time. Having a plan for what you will eat (and when) removes stress from mealtime. You are likely to make better food choices before you are hungry. If you have healthy meals prepped, they will be the easiest option when it is time to eat, and you will likely choose to eat that rather than unhealthy options.
  4. Know what’s in your food. Read labels, and steer clear of processed foods. Eat fresh fruits and veggies every day. 
  5. Travel with easy to eat snacks like jerky, bliss balls, energy bars, or trail mix. If you can’t pack yourself food, pick up food on the road from places you know will have healthy options. Skip the sweets and sugary drinks.
